ADAM HURT
2008 BANJO AND FIDDLE WORKSHOPS
Adam at Clifftop
6-7 December 2008:
The Essence of Round Peak Banjo
This class will provide an introduction to the style and substance of the Round Peak banjo as played by Tommy Jarrell, Kyle Creed, Fred Cockerham, and others. We will be doing a lot of listening, but we will also do plenty of playing as we learn some traditional tunes in the local fashion of musically rich Surry County, North Carolina and the surrounding area. Many technical tricks that shape the unique Round Peak banjo style will be exposed in the process, so that students can add them in appropriate ways to tunes that they already know. Students should have a good working knowledge of the basics of the clawhammer style, including the drop-thumb technique, and should be comfortable playing in the keys of A and D. The use of a recording device is highly recommended, as all tunes will be taught by ear in the traditional manner. £110 per person; 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM both days with breaks for lunch and refreshments
Saturday 13 December: 2008
Advanced Fiddle Workshop
with Special Emphasis on Bowing £55 per person; 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM with breaks for lunch and refreshments
Sunday 14 December 2008
For BANJO Alternate Tunings for the Key of G
In this workshop, we will examine three G tunings: Sandy River Belle tuning (gEADE), Old G (gDGDE), and, of course, standard G (gDGBD). To start the session, several tunes, both chestnuts and more obscure numbers, will be selected and played in each banjo tuning to illustrate the different melodic and playability-based possibilities of these tunings. Together, we will then learn a tune or two in all three tunings. It's really quite an engaging presentation, an opportunity for students to develop some ideas about using these tunings with tunes they already know, and an impetus for them to learn future new tunes in the alternate tunings in the first place. Students will learn which tunings best suit various types of tunes, knowledge that they can then apply to their entire repertoire in the key of G. This is a workshop for experienced intermediate or advanced players who can execute the drop-thumb. The use of a recording device is highly recommended, as all tunes will be taught by ear in the traditional manner. £55 per person; 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM with breaks for lunch and refreshments

Further Information
The Adam Hurt workshops will take place in the home of Roger and Patsy Young in the village of Flitcham, near King's Lynn. The full address is The Old Post Office, Flitcham, King's Lynn, Norfolk. PE31 6BP. Both Roger and Patsy play clawhammer banjo and Old Time music and so a warm and sympathetic welcome is assured to all workshop members. Flitcham is situated about nine miles to the East of Kings Lynn on the Sandringham Estate (the home of the Royal Family). Precise and detailed travel instructions will be provided to all applicants if needed. The workshops will take place in a large comfortable living room. We are able to provide lunch and refreshments. We would need to be advised of any special dietary requirements you may have. We believe this would be much more comfortable and suitable rather than hire some draughty village hall but we may change the venue if necessary (such as if we have to cater for wheelchairs). There is plenty of reasonably priced local accommodation available - it is very much a tourist region although it will be out of season in December.and we can provide a contact details list on request. As a first suggestion, why not have a look at the Ffolkes Arms, www.ffolkes-arms-hotel.co.uk/ which is just one mile away from the house. The workshops start at 10:30 in the morning which allows plenty of time for local travel and preparation before the workshop starts. Please do not hesitate to contact Roger Young if you have further questions. The home telephone number is 01485 600948
